Wealdstone Reserves produced a second half fight back to defeat holders Ashford Town (Middlesex) 3-2 in the final of the Middlesex Premier Cup at Harrow Borough’s Earlsmead ground on a wet Wednesday evening.
Ashford took the lead in the fifteenth minute through an own goal when a free kick was headed into the Stones net. Town increased their lead on the stroke of half time when Paul Timba scored to give the holders a two-goal lead at the break.
The half time team talk had an immediate effect as Stones reduced the deficit through Wayne Reid. But Ashford Town had two guilt edged chances to restore their advantage minutes later when first keeper Carr was forced into a fine save before the resulting corner saw an Ashford header go wide when free on the six-yard line.
In the sixty-fifth minute Stones drew level from the penalty spot, following a poor challenge by Ashford keeper Paul McCarthy. Omar Sagna coolly slotted home into the roof of the net.
Both sides pressed for a winner but it was Wealdstone that claimed it with fifteen minutes remaining. A Stones corner was cleared to Kurt Moriese at the edge of the box who netted with a smart shot and signal an exuberant celebration that resulted in a booking for one of the substitutes from referee Liam Walshe.
Ashford pressed for an equaliser but they were unable to send the match into extra time. Wealdstone had won the Premier Cup on one previous occasion in 2004.
